Our philosophy is to hire "stellar" programmer-scientists and to take on scientific software development projects that can be accomplished by a small team working closely together. The internet offers an opportunity for a new kind of "close" collaboration that has no relation to geography. Programmers on opposite ends of the continent or even on different continents may work simultaneously from the same code base. Modern configuration management tools automatically prevent multiple changes from interfering with one another. While each team member has an area of primary responsibility, all of the source code is available to any team member to modify if necessary.

The "virtual development team" approach gives Stellar Science an advantage in attracting talented scientists and programmers who may not share the same preference for geographic location. While most programmers work at a local Stellar Science office, those who are more effective working at home have that flexibility as well.
